Mom In A Fridge (December 5, 2008)

Jo and Val are sisters.  Jo is 66 years old and Val is 59 years old.  They live in London.  Jo works at a restaurant and Val works at a bank.  They are not married so they spend a lot of time together.   Once in a while, they have dinner with their aunties.

In 1997, their mother died of cancer.  Jo and Val were very sad.  They really missed their mother.  They loved their mother very much.  Usually, when someone dies, the body is put in a coffin.  Then the coffin is buried in a cemetery or it is cremated (burned into ashes).  However, Jo and Val asked the funeral home to keep their mother’s body in a fridge to keep the body from rotting and smelling bad.

For the past eleven years, Jo and Val have visited their mother at the funeral home every week.  They would go to the funeral home and open the fridge.  They would put make-up on their mother’s face.  

When Jo and Val told their relatives about their mom in the fridge, they were not happy.  They believed that the body should have been buried or cremated years ago.  However, they decided to let Jo and Val do what they wanted. 

The problem is that Jo and Val only think and talk about their dead mother.  They do not have any friends.  One of their aunties finally told the police about them.  After the police investigated the case, they found that Jo and Val did not break any laws.  They could keep their mom in a fridge.

Many people think that the sisters should “move on” with their lives.  Some people think that what they do should be private.  What do you think?

Ian is 25 years old and he lives in Romania. He is a truck driver and he hates his job. Since Romania is a pretty big Eastern European country, he sometimes has to drive for many hours. It gets kind of boring and he has to stay focused on the road for so long. Sometimes he has to drive 10 to 15 hours. He doesn't want to quit because his salary is good.

Last year, his boss told him that he had to make a delivery from City A to City B. He would have to be on the road for 20 hours. He knew he would be tired and bored so he asked his friend to join him. His friend agreed to ride with him.

After a few hours on the road, they were both bored. Then Ian had an idea. He told his friend to take out his camera. Ian started to dance and drive at the same time. His friend recorded Ian's dance and put it on YouTube. Ian has been a YouTube star because many people have watched him dance and drive. The Romanian police has been looking for Ian because they want to charge him for dangerous driving.

A few months ago, the police arrested Ian because he was drinking and driving.

Some people in Romania are happy because they feel safer now that Ian can no longer drive.  The video of Ian dancing and driving may seem funny to most people but it is actually quite scary. He uses his foot to steer and there are moments when his hands are not on the steering wheel! It is important that drivers take driving seriously. Many people get hurt because of dangerous drivers.

A Rickshaw Driver (March 10, 2010)

Mr. Chen is 42 years old and he lives in Beijing. He is a rickshaw driver and he makes less than 50 RMB a day. His wife is disabled so she collect cans from rubbish bins and sells them to a recycling center. They have a 4 year old daughter and a 2 year old son. They do not have a lot of money.

In January, 2010, a bad person stole Mr. and Mrs. Chen's daughter. They were shocked, sad and angry. They didn't even have a picture of her and the police told them it would be very difficult to find their daughter without a picture. Mr. Chen knew that he had to be very careful with his son because he didn't want to lose him too.

He decided to buy a chain and a lock. He took his son to work with him and chained him to a lamp post whenever he had a customer. A rich couple saw this cute little boy and offered to pay Mr. Chen a lot of money for his child. They told Mr. Chen that he would not have to be a rickshaw driver anymore. Mr. Chen refused the money and told them that he loved his son too much.

Many people think that Mr. Chen is a terrible and irresponsible father. Others believe that he has no choice. Mr. Chen loves his son but he does not have enough money to pay someone to look after his son. Now that Mr. Chen and his son are in the news, there are a few pictures of the boy on the internet. Hopefully, bad people will stay away from Mr. Chen's son because photos of his son can easily be found.

Lost and Found (February 10, 2010)

James is 27 years old. He works for a church in America and he does not have a lot of money. He works at a church because he wants to help people. He has a girlfriend Sonya and they are in love.

Two years ago, James decided he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Sonya. Unfortunately, he didn't have enough money to buy a diamond ring. So each month, he saved some money and waited patiently. Last year, he finally saved enough money to buy a 1 carat diamond ring for Sonya. When he got the ring, he immediately made plans to propose.

He picked a perfect Saturday to take Sonya out on a hot air balloon ride. The sky was blue and the clouds were white. The air was fresh and they were both very happy. When the time was right, he took out the ring and asked Sonya to marry him. She was so excited that she jumped up and down in joy. However, they were in this big basket 500 ft above the ground and James lost his balance. He dropped the ring into the forest below. He was heart-broken because he knew that he didn't have enough money to buy another diamond ring.

On the following Monday morning, he asked God to help him find the ring. He went to the forest and searched for it. Although he didn't find it, he didn't give up. He prayed again the next day before going to the forest to search for the ring. On the 7th day, he found it under a leaf! He was very happy and Sonya was even happier. They are now making plans to get married in June, 2010.

Let's Go To Dubai (January 20, 2010)

Dubai is one of seven emirates or states. It is a part of United Arab Emirates. UAE has seven emirates and Dubai has the largest population among the seven emirates. It's very hot in Dubai because it's a part of a desert called the Arabian Desert. Many people visit Dubai because there are so many things to see.

If you know how to ski, you can go to Ski Dubai. You can ski indoors all year round and there are five slopes. Next to the slopes is a big play area with an ice cave, climbing towers, and an icy body slide.
When you are old enough, you can go to Dubai's ice bar. Almost everything inside the bar is made of ice. You can sit on ice, drink from ice cups, and eat snacks on ice tables.

For the past few years, the tallest building in the world was Taipei 101. This year, Taipei 101 will be the second tallest building in the world. The tallest building in the world is now the Dubai Tower (Burj Dubai). You can go to the 124th floor and look down at the cars or look up and feel closer to the clouds.

Dubai wants to build more and more cool places for you to visit. It plans to build an underwater hotel called the Hydropolis. There will be 220 rooms and they will be shaped like bubbles. If you want to live in Dubai, you can wait for the completion of Palm Islands. These islands are man-made and each house will have its own private beach.

The problem with visiting Dubai is that these cool places cost a lot of money to build. So everything in Dubai is quite expensive.

Panic Face King (November 25, 2009)

Panic Face King is a popular TV show in Japan. The show is about finding new ways to scare people. The cameras are always hidden and there are about 5 actors on the show.

In October, 2009, one of the actors invited Mr. X to a fake job interview. (The true identity of Mr. X is unclear). Mr. X really wanted this job so he agreed to meet. He walked into a large room and sat down. The three actors asked Mr. X a few questions.

While they were talking about the job, a fake sniper shot the three actors. The actors had small bags of red ink on their bodies and when they heard the loud "bangs," they popped the bags of red ink. Mr. X was frozen in fear.

After a while, he slowly crawled like a baby to the door and screamed for help. A fourth actor rushed in and tried to rescue him. However, Mr. X was so scared that he could not move his legs. The fourth actor had to drag him to a second door. Mr. X was too frightened to move on his own.A fifth actor came in and told Mr. X that everything was fake and he explained to him that he was on a TV show. Poor Mr. X was so terrified that he still could not stand up.

Not many people outside of Japan have seen this show. Due to the look on Mr. X's face, this show has been put on YouTube and many people around the world have seen it. Some people are angry because they think the show is cruel. Others argue that scaring people for fun is good entertainment. What do you think?

Amina is 34 years old and she lives in Hong Kong. She is not a very happy person and she gets angry easily. She also likes to drink alcohol. She is the niece of a famous judge.

Two years ago, she had an argument with a taxi driver. They were arguing over the 17 dollar fare. Amina took out her credit card and threw it at the taxi driver. The driver called the police and when the police arrived, Amina kicked and slapped one of the police officers. She was immediately arrested. The judge told her that she had to pay $1,000 to the taxi driver and she had to serve 200 hours of community service.

A few months ago, Amina was driving home. She crashed into a bus and someone called the police. She refused to go to the hospital and she refused to answer the police officer's questions. She refused to take a breath test. She kept saying, "I have to leave. I want to go. I have to leave." She was shouting at the police officers. Amina was so out of control that she decided to walk away. A police officer blocked her way and she slapped him on the face! The police officer was in shock and then he fell to the ground in pain.

Many people in Hong Kong are not happy with Amina because she is so disrespectful. However, they also think it's funny that a big and strong policeman fell to the ground in pain after one slap. Some people in Hong Kong think that Amina should be jailed because she has no respect towards police officers. Others think that police officers should be physically strong enough to handle a slap on the face.

Pilipinas Got Talent (May 5, 2010)

Reggie Ramirez is 34 years old and he lives in Davao City. Davao City is in the Philippines. He has not seen his brother since he was a child. He has no idea where his brother might be. He misses his brother very much.

Earlier this year, Reggie had an idea. Since many people watch Pilipinas Got Talent, he decided to participate in this competition. He wanted to sing on the show because if his brother saw him on television, maybe his brother would contact him. He also knew that he had to do something special on the show because he also wanted to win the competition. The winner of the competition gets a lot of money and he needs the money to help his family.

His friends told him that he a great falsetto voice. He decided to sing a duet called Endless Love on the show. A duet is when two people sing the same song together. He painted half of face to look like a man and the other half to look like a woman. He had a special costume made. Half of his costume was a pink dress and the other half was a black suit. When he sang with a man's voice, he turned to his right. When he sang with a woman's voice, he turned to his left. When he sang like a man, his voice was deep and strong. When he sang like a woman, his voice was sweet and he moved his body like a woman too. He did a great job.

Unfortunately, he did not win the competition. However, he still has hope that he will find his brother.

Bieber Fever (May 12, 2010)

Justin Bieber is 16 years old. He was born in Canada but he lives in American now. He is a talented singer and a good musician.

When he was very young, his parents got a divorce. His mother took care of him and Justin was happy to be with his mom. Justin was always good at singing but he also loved muscial instruments. He taught himself how to play the piano. Then he taught himself how to play the guitar, the trumpet, and the drums. He sang at weddings and parties. People loved his voice. His mother recorded his performances and put them on YouTube for her family and friends.

One of her friends told Scooter Braun to look at one of Justin's videos. Scooter knows a lot of people in the music business. He loved the videos and contacted Justin's mother. He invited them to meet Usher, a famous singer and music producer in America. They accepted his invitation and they met Usher. Usher asked Justin to sing for him and Justin did. Usher loved Justin's voice and offered to sign him to a contract. Justin signed with Usher when he was 14 years old.

A year later, Justin's first CD came out and a few of his songs were hits in 10 different countries. He was supposed to perform at a mall but the performance was cancelled because more than 3,000 fans showed up. Justin's manager did not expect so many people and the police arrived because some fans were hurt. In March, 2010, Justin came out with his second CD and some of his songs were also very popular. In two years, Justin has become an international pop star. Have you heard of his song called One Time?

An Honest Golfer (May 19, 2010)

Brian Davis is a professional golfer from England. He is 35 years old and he has won two tournaments in Europe. He believes that one day, he will win a PGA tournament in America. Although Tiger Woods is only 34 years old, he has won 71 PGA tournaments. Brian knows that he is not like Tiger. However, he believes that he can win at least one PGA golf tournament.

In April 2010, Brian was in a PGA tournament and he played well. After four days of golf, his score was tied with another golfer called Jim Furyk. When the score is tied at the end of the last round, the players who are tied have to start the playoffs. The first golfer to win the next hole will win the championship. They keep playing until one golfer wins the hole. Brian was excited to be so close to winning his first PGA tournament.

He was a bit nervous. His first shot was not good and it missed the fairway. His second shot was good and the golf ball landed close to the hole. However, he knew something was wrong with his shot. He asked one of the officials to review the videotape because he thought he saw his golf club touch a reed. He knew that one of the rules in golf is that a golf club cannot touch anything before it hits the ball. The official had to watch the videotape in slow motion before he could see the club touching the reed. The official agreed with Brian and Brian lost the tournament because of the penalty.

Brian told everyone that although he really wanted to win his first PGA tournament, honesty is more important than winning.

A Holy Man (May 26, 2010)

Prahlad Jani is 82 years old and he lives in India. He doesn't have a home and he travels all over the country. People call him a holy man because he claims he has not eaten or drunk anything in 70 years. He says that a goddess feeds him every day. Most doctors do not believe that a person can survive without food or water. They think that Jani is a liar. Some doctors want to know if Prahlad is telling the truth. 

In April, 2010, Prahlad was invited to stay at a hospital for about three weeks. He was not given any food or water. The doctors checked his body to see if he was suffering from not eating and drinking anything. After 8 days, the doctors concluded that he is in good health. Although he is 82 years old, his brain is like a 25 year old man's brain. Since he has not eaten or drunk anything, he has not used the bathroom at all.

If Prahlad is telling the truth, doctors want to know the secret behind his ability to not eat or drink. They think that it would be very helpful to know how a person can survive without food or water because in the future, there could be situations where food and water may not be available. Some people who can survive without food for a long time but they must have water. Prahlad is special because he doesn't need any water.

Fasting means not eating anything for a long period of time. Thirty years ago, a man called Angus Barbieri fasted for 382 days in Scotland. He only drank coffee, tea, and soda water. How long can you fast?

Sean Murphy's Big Mouth (February 10, 2010)

Sean Murphy lives in Lansing, Michigan. He loves animals very much so he thinks he has a great job because he works at one of the biggest pet stores in the city.

Last year, Sean was watching videos on YouTube and he found a video of a man who put 11 live Madagascar cockroaches in his mouth. These cockroaches were 2 1/2 to 3 inches long and their legs had sharp barbs on them. Sean had a feeling that he could beat that record. He bought some Madagascar cockroaches and went to the bathroom to practice. He put one in his mouth and he felt okay. The only problem was the bleeding in his mouth because of the cockroaches' legs.

After months of practicing, he decided to break the record on October 23, 2009. He invited his friends to the pet store and started to do it. He slowly put 12 Madagascar cockroaches in his mouth and held them in for 10 seconds. Then he put another one in. He continued to put 4 more cockroaches in his mouth and he held them in for 10 seconds. So the new record is now 16 live cockroaches in a person's mouth.

One of Sean's friends recorded this event and put in on YouTube. You can watch it but it is very disgusting. Don't watch it if you are scared of cockroaches. Madagascar cockroaches are very ugly.

Sean knew that he could put 12 cockroaches in his mouth but he was surprised that he could reach 16. Now that he has reached 16, he is thinking about going for 20 next year.

He is waiting for the Guinness World Records committee to confirm that he is the new record holder.
